5 July, 2023 — General Motors has acquired Algolion, an Israeli software startup specializing in detecting potential hazards in EV battery cells. Algolion’s software utilizes data streams from EV battery management systems to identify anomalies in cell performance and predict battery fires. The acquisition is aimed at strengthening GM’s ability to scale its EV production and deliver high-performing vehicles.
Algolion’s cutting-edge battery analytics and prediction software can detect even minute changes in battery health weeks earlier than other methods, providing valuable early warnings. This is particularly significant for GM, which faced battery fire risks with its Chevrolet Bolt EVs — the automaker issued two recalls for thousands of vehicles and halted production at its Michigan assembly plant.
The acquisition of Algolion was led by GM’s Technology Acceleration and Commercialization organization, which seeks emerging battery technology, investment opportunities, and partnerships to advance GM’s position in battery development. By incorporating Algolion’s software, GM aims to enhance battery safety, mitigate fire risks, and improve the overall performance of its EVs.
